January 11, 2019 – Michael Atiyah, Chair of the Shaw Prize Selection Committee in Mathematical Sciences for 2006-2010 and Honorary Professor in the School of Mathematics at the University of Edinburgh, passed away in UK at the age of 89.
Professor Atiyah had made outstanding contributions to geometry and topology. From his first major contribution – topological K-theory – to advances in quantum field theory, He had been influential in the development of new theoretical tools and had supplied far-reaching insights. Prof Atiyah was the recipient of the Fields Medal in 1966 and the Abel Prize in 2004. He was the President of the Royal Society (1990-1995) and the Royal Society of Edinburgh (2005-2008).
Prof Atiyah’s passing is a great loss to the world of mathematics and the Shaw Prize Foundation sends most sincere condolences to his beloved family, his colleagues and his friends.
