December 22, 2018 – Jean Bourgain, 2010 Shaw Prize Laureate and IBM von Neumann Professor in the School of Mathematics at the Institute for Advanced Study, one of the greatest mathematicians of our time, passed away in Bonheiden, Belgium at the age of 64.
Professor Bourgain had made significant fundamental contributions in many fields including harmonic analysis, functional analysis, ergodic theory, partial differential equations, mathematical physics, combinatorics and theoretical computer science. We are grateful to have had the opportunity to highlight his outstanding scientific achievements with the award of the 2010 Shaw Prize in Mathematical Sciences.
All of us involved in The Shaw Prize are deeply saddened to hear of this news and send our sincere condolences and warm sympathy to all his beloved family as they mourn the loss of a remarkable man.
