The Hong Kong Space Museum and The Shaw Prize Foundation are pleased to present the “Shaw Laureates Space Theatre Lecture: Walk with the Stars”. The lecture aims to enhance astronomy education, and inspire high school physics students through the personal experiences of esteemed astronomers. It will be presented by Professor Shrinivas R Kulkarni, the 2024 Shaw Laureate in Astronomy. The moderator will be Professor Chu Ming-chung, Choh-Ming Li Professor of Physics of The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
About the Speaker
Shrinivas R Kulkarni
Shaw Laureate in Astronomy 2024
Professor Shrinivas R Kulkarni is honoured for his pioneering work in time-domain astronomy, including ground-breaking discoveries related to millisecond pulsars, gamma-ray bursts, supernovae, and other transient astronomical phenomena. His exceptional contributions include the conception, construction and leadership of the Palomar Transient Factory and the Zwicky Transient Facility. These facilities have revolutionised our understanding of the time-variable optical sky.
About the Lecture
During the lecture, Professor Kulkarni will share his story with the stars, discussing his research motivations, as well as the joys and challenges he has faced. Using the digital sky projection system in the Space Theatre, the presentation will also simulate the variable and transient astronomical objects that hold special significance for him. The audience will embark on an immersive journey through the cosmos and explore Professor Kulkarni’s remarkable contributions in a captivating full-dome environment. The lecture will be conducted in English.
